Liminal Spaces are places of transition. They are the places in-between where you have been and where you are going. Characteristically they can feel familiar, and yet produce a surreal aura. It is the blankness of the man-made space which invites a viewer to insert their own feelings, assumptions, fears, and intuitions to what is before them.
Painting in separate locations, artists Brendan McKelvy and Leanna Yatcilla focused on what Liminal Spaces meant to them and exchanged sketches of their ideas while both continuing to work in their own style, though adjusting to their partner’s compositional choices.
These resulting paintings, all oil on canvas, share eerie compositions, odd patterns, and altered colors. They range in size to create a variety of experiences for viewers. McKelvy's fuzzy appearance and textured brushstrokes allude to a dreamlike state, while Yatcilla’s sharper lines and more vivid color palettes evoke a falsified illusion of reality. Both artists’ work highlights the oddity of skewed perspectives and how it forces the mind to adjust to a new setting.
